چکیده
A case report is presented in which a patient receiving the monoamine oxidase inhibitor, phenelzine, developed a delayed excitatory reaction following administration of topical cocaine spray during anaesthesia for vocal cord surgery. The pharmacological basis of the drug interaction is discussed.

Influence of pretreatment with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (phenelzine) on the effects of buprenorphine and pethidine in the conscious rabbit.
The existence of a severe toxic interaction (occasionally fatal) from the clinical use of pethidine and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors is well established. The present study evaluates the possibility of such an interaction existing for the opioid partial agonist buprenorphine. Conscious rabbits (n = 6 in each group) pretreated 18-24 h previously with physiological saline or the MAO inhibito...
متن کاملParkinsonism induced by a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
A parkinsonian syndrome developed 5 weeks after administration of phenelzine in a 42 year old woman with major depressive illness. Discontinuation of this agent resulted in gradual disappearance of the extrapyramidal syndrome. Possible underlying mechanisms for this unusual case are discussed.
متن کاملAldehyde load in ischemia-reperfusion brain injury: neuroprotection by neutralization of reactive aldehydes with phenelzine.
In ongoing studies of the neuroprotective properties of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, we found that phenelzine provided robust neuroprotection in the gerbil model of transient forebrain ischemia, with drug administration delayed up to 3 h post reperfusion. Since ischemia-reperfusion brain injury is associated with large increases in the concentrations of reactive aldehydes in the penumbra area,...
متن کاملTreatment of atypical depression with cognitive therapy or phenelzine: a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Patients with atypical depression are more likely to respond to monoamine oxidase inhibitors than to tricyclic antidepressants. They are frequently offered psychotherapy in the absence of controlled tests. There are no prospective, randomized, controlled trials, to our knowledge, of psychotherapy for atypical depression or of cognitive therapy compared with a monoamine oxidase inhibi...
متن کاملChronic treatment with the monoamine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine increases hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical activity in male C57BL/6 mice: relevance to atypical depression.
Atypical depression has been linked to low hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activity and exhibits physical and affective symptoms resembling those of glucocorticoid deficiency. Because atypical depression has also been defined by preferential responsiveness to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO-I), we hypothesized that MAO-I reverse these abnormalities by interfering with glucocorticoi...
